If Beale Street Could Talk is a 2018 Annapurna Pictures,PASTEL,Plan B Entertainment is scheduled to be released on December 25, 2018.
Directed and written by Barry Jenkins, If Beale Street Could Talk is a drama with romantic overtones and social content that revolves around a young couple of blacks who soon suffer a great injustice.
Tish (Kiki Layne in his film debut) and Fonny (Stephan James) have known each other since they are little and once in early adulthood they realize that theirs is something stronger than a friendship, they discover that they are in love. When they are about to move in together, a suspicious altercation results in Fonny being imprisoned, accused of a serious crime and with an unencouraging outlook. As if that were not enough, Tish discovers that she is pregnant, which confronts the two families whose women never managed to understand each other.
Jenkins portrays his protagonists in a beautiful and delicate way, with a lot of elegance, without a doubt in love with them. At times with a lot of sweetness, something similar to what I did in Moonlight. But this time the plot moves with greater lightness, between times interspersed, leaving evidence that we are not only before a love story, but before one of perseverance.
Tish and Fonny seem to have the world against them. The country in which they live never seems worried about helping them, on the contrary, they are always hostile only because of their skin color. However, the film does not work as a denunciation, but rather it is a period portrait (it happens in the 70s) that resonates in a current way.
There is also a remarkable direction of art and costumes that help portray the era. And the performances are all remarkable, made to excel in time of awards. And yet the film does not manage to effectively transmit everything it seeks: the love story, the melancholy tone, dramatic intensity, sometimes feel a bit forced.
